Warsaw is a fast becoming a prominent tourist destination as Poland is becoming widely known for its natural beauty and environment. The best times to visit is during May to October, when the weather is marvelous for hiking and traveling due to a mixture of currents in the east and Mediterranean.
Climate is good in Warsaw
Temperatures in spring may reach as low as 0 to 16oC and it is definitely wet weather. But as summer sets in, it may reach up to 30o, although it still rains intermittently. Temperatures go down in autumn until it reaches below zero for the winter season of snow and fogs.
Currency is zloty (100 grozny)
The currency of Poland is the zloty (PLN) which is equivalent to 100 grozny. It is consid
ered a better deal to exchange your foreign currency with a kantor or an exchange office that has their rates displayed. Most credit cards are accepted by major establishments such as hotels, petrol stations, travel agencies and large establishments.
Cheap restaurants
Fast food establishments, milk bars and some small restaurants cater to those tourists with a limited budget although there are the high end ones for those who would like to splurge on their meals.
Traditional polish food: Przekask, Kulebiak, Kabanos, Mysliwska
When in Warsaw, you have to try to eat like the Polish eats. They start their meal with przekaski which is either a pike in aspic, herring filled salted then rolled with onions and pickles, fish marinated in sour cream. Kulebiak follows which is a cabbage and large mushroom pasty. Polish sausages include kabanos which are the thin, long and spicy, and the mysliwska or hunter’s sausage which is made up of game and pork. Soup is an essential part of a Polish meal, usually prepared rich and thick like barszez or beetroot soup and rosol or beef/chicken boullion, then served in cups with meat stuffed pasties. Other dishes include zrazy zawijane or beefsteak rolls with mushroom stuffing, kasza or buckwheat, sledz or herring, ryba or carp. For your sweet tooth, you can try ciastka or pastries.
Tip at restaurants
Tips for waiters and food servers are not included in the bill so it is customary to add a tenth of the bill upon payment as tip.
Travel by car in Poland, the roads are quite bad
Roads in Warsaw are not well maintained so car travel is discouraged aside from the fact that Polish drivers in general like to drive fast. Drinking and driving is not tolerated, with the permitted blood alcohol level being at 0.2%. The speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas and up to 90kmh in the outskirts. Trams are given the right of way. Vehicles are requested to have their headlights on at all times during the months of October to March.
Public transportations in Warsaw
The safest and most inexpensive way to travel in Warsaw is through public transport. They are available from 5 in the morning to 11 in the evening. Warsaw has a single subway line, and four types of trains within Poland. Taxis are also available 24 hours a day. A tramway line is available during the summer, weekends and holidays.
Tours and excursions in Warsaw
You can also opt to go on the Old Town Street Car for a grand tour of the Old and New Town. The Zoological Garden is a nice place to visit, as well as the Botanical Garden located in the Warsaw University. You can also view from the tower of St. Anne’s Church the Old Town. For a hassle free sight seeing experience, you may also decide to get a Warsaw Tourist Card that gives you the privilege to go to all museums, public transport, and other facilities and establishments for free or a discounted charge within 24 hours, 36 hours or a week.
