Miami City and Travel Guide
Rhythms Dictate the Miami Way of Life
The proximity of the city of Miami in Florida to Cuba has left an indelible mark on the culture of the city of Miami. It began with the influx of refugees from Cuba who sought political asylum in Miami in the 1960s, and eventually set up their own little Cuban-inspired community in Miami dubbed Little Havana. This is why Miami visitors will find a significant Cuban influence in Miami culture, from the fusion of Miami and Cuban cuisine into a unique cooking style called Floribbean cuisine, the daily performance of salsa music from Miami residences and public areas, to the architecture of Miami houses and cabanas whose wild colors are reminiscent of the vibrant Caribbean flora and fauna.
Big dining festival - The Miami spice
One event that Miami visitors can sample if they arrive in Miami this August and September is the Miami Spice 2007 dining festival. As part of this festival, Miami cuisine is prepared for Miami visitors by some of the finest dining establishments Miami has to offer.
The Miami Bungalows exhibition
Next on the list of 2007 special events in Miami is the Miami Bungalows exhibition hosted by the Historical Museum of Southern Florida. In this exhibition, architecture students display samples of drawings, scale models, and photographs of the typical Miami bungalow which has become a symbol of middle-class American culture in the 20th century.
Water Stories is another Miami event this 2007 that Miami visitors can look forward to attending. In Water Stories, the interaction of Miami inhabitants with water bodies for the past 10,000 years is explored, particularly in the areas of environmental destruction, recreation, transportation, and nourishment. Types of different water vessels used over time in Miami waters are shown such as a Cuban refugee raft, a trapper's skiff, and even an Indian canoe.
Tamayo exhibition at the Miami Art Museum
Modern artist Tamayo is having an exhibition in Miami of 100 of his best paintings gleaned from an artistic career lasting seven decades. The exhibition, which is hosted by the Miami Art Museum, will last until September 23, 2007. This is the first major US exhibition of work from this particular Miami artist after almost 30 years.
Rob Storter at the Miami Historical Museum
Another artist who was chosen by the Miami Historical Museum for an exhibition of his work this 2007 is Rob Storter, who was not only a folk artist but a fisherman as well before he passed away in 1987. Rob Storter came from one of the founding families of the Everglades City, which is why the Miami exhibition focuses on how Rob Storter lived and did his art in the early years of 1894 to 1916.
