Happy Birthday Los Angeles!

If you are planning a visit to the city of Los Angeles this 2007, do try to make it by September 2 because on that day Los Angeles will be celebrating its 226th anniversary (or birthday if you want to follow what most Los Angeles residents say.) The metropolis of Los Angeles was actually initially settled by 11 key families who were recruited from the town of Alamos of Sonora, New Spain (or what is now known as the country of Mexico). The members of these 11 families were known as los pobladores, or simply the settlers. The first name of the city of Los Angeles at that time was El Pueblo de Los Angeles (or The Town of the Queen of the Angels.) Over time, the name was shortened to the present form of Los Angeles, or simply LA.

Biggest city in California

Based on population size, Los Angeles is presently the biggest among the cities of California. It is also the biggest of the West Coast cities, and the second most densely-populated city in the country. More than 3.8 million people inhabit Los Angeles which acts as the county seat of Los Angeles County. Los Angeles has created a lasting reputation for itself as the home of great forms of popular entertainment such as pop music, movies and television shows, a fact which serves to lure fans as well as individuals who want to become popular entertainment personalities as well. The Los Angeles entertainment industry has been so successful at promoting itself that much of the tourism of California is built around the Los Angeles entertainment industry.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Another aspect of life in Los Angeles that draws people from around the world is the health and fitness culture of Los Angeles. A good example of a fitness buff who was lured to Los Angeles is current California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger was originally from Austria but migrated to California after making a name for himself as one of the top male bodybuilders in the world. After a period when he became a successful Hollywood actor, Schwarzenegger proved himself to be a capable government administrator, aside from being an icon of bodybuilding. In a similar fashion, people from various nationalities flock to Los Angeles to learn how to build and tone their bodies to meet the standards set by Los Angeles-based health and fitness personalities. The health and fitness industry of Los Angeles is closely linked to the persona displayed by movie and television celebrities who are held up to the public as the ideal. Many of these movie and television personalities (many of whom live in Los Angeles as well) have become health and fitness product endorsers as well.

Earthquakes in Los Angeles

Unfortunately, Los Angeles is vulnerable to earthquakes because of its proximity to the Pacific Ring of Fire. Most people are not aware that Los Angeles is subject to at least 10,000 earthquakes of varying degrees every year. Still, people do not seem to mind the risk because migration into Los Angeles continues annually, to the point that recently there was a movement to restrict the migration into Los Angeles by outsiders.

The air in the town could be better

Another problem that Los Angeles faces is the prevalence of smog, or air pollution, due to sources of air pollution such as trains, road vehicles, and manufacturing industries. Los Angeles gets scanty rain every year, which only encourages the build-up of air pollution. Because of this, Los Angeles officials and members of the Los Angeles community have initiated moves to mandate the use of low-emission vehicles on Los Angeles roads.
