London City and Travel Guide

Pay a Visit to the Royal and Ancient City of London

Modern-day London is a bustling metropolis that also encompasses the medieval structures of the ancient City of London. The global city of London is presently considered the capital of both England, and the United Kingdom. Being one of the top cultural, financial, and business centers of the world, London is able to strongly influence movements in the fields of arts, fashion, media, entertainment, education, and politics. Other good websites about London is Visit London.

Biggest city in the European Union

As of 2007, there were officially 7.7 million people residing within London city limits, making the population of London the biggest (within city limits) in the European Union. The metropolitan area of London itself is inhabited by 12 million to 14 million residents who come from a diverse array of nationalities. In fact, over 300 individual languages can be heard being spoken in London any day of the week – showing just how varied the London population is.

Transportations

Being the busy city that it is, London has not one but five international airports to serve the travel needs of London natives and visitors. The major airport of London is the Heathrow Airport which surpasses any other international airport in the world based on numbers of air passengers served. London is not only an aviation destination, it also has a large port as well as the biggest underground rail system in Europe (based on route length) to help London residents get from here to there. A major river – the River Thames – cuts through London, serving as a vital waterway and tourist attraction at the same time.

Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge

Some famous historical places you could visit in London are the British Museum, the National Gallery, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, the Tower Bridge, and the Houses of Parliament. But though so many key governmental institutions can be found in London, surprisingly London has never received official confirmation that it is actually the capital of England and the United Kingdom (either in writing or by statute). London is considered the de facto state capital as part of the unwritten constitution of the United Kingdom. This makes London very different from other state capitals in the world which have received official recognition of their status. You would think that London would have been officially designated as the state capital already due to the length of time that it has existed, but such is not the case. And the state of London does not seem to be on the brink of changing any time soon.

The climate in London is quite rainy sometimes, don´t forget the umbrella

If you are going to visit London, be prepared to ration your water needs since water is a scarce commodity in London (with water resources considered equivalent to the state of Israel, which admittedly has very scarce water resources.) Still, London generally has a temperate climate with regular instances of precipitation throughout the year. Snowfall is quite modest in winter, especially in the urban areas which are hotter than surrounding areas. But when in London, do as the Londoners do and always carry an umbrella with you.

Relax in London

Whether your stay in London is to be temporary or relatively permanent, it would be a shame if you were to miss visiting the sites and attractions of London because of your schedule. So make time to relax and pay a visit to the ancient and royal City of London as well.
