Amazing Kuala Lumpur – From Mining Community to Cosmopolitan City

Malaysia is poised to become one of the leading countries in the world in the future, mainly through the growth being experienced by its capital Kuala Lumpur. Not only is Kuala Lumpur presently the biggest city in Malaysia, but it is also the legislative center of the country since it is home to the Parliament of Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is a Malaysian Federal Territory which falls under the jurisdiction of the state of Selangor. Most Malaysians know Kuala Lumpur by its nickname KL.

Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia

The country of Malaysia only became the Federation of Malaya (as it is officially known) in 1957. Before that, it was occupied by the British. But even prior to the declaration of independence from the British, Kuala Lumpur was already considered the capital of Malaysia. Much of the population of Kuala Lumpur is composed of ethnic Chinese (a reminder of the days when Chinese manned the nearby tin mines), but there are many other cultural communities that make Kuala Lumpur their home (such as Indian Muslims and chettiars, and Malays.)

Climate here is very good

Because of the presence of the Indonesian island of Sumatra in the west, and the Titiwangsa Mountains in the east, Kuala Lumpur is able to enjoy an equatorial climate throughout the year. Most of the time, Kuala Lumpur days are sunny and warm though rain is pretty common too, particularly at the onset of the southwest monsoon from September to April. When forest fires occur in Sumatra Island, Kuala Lumpur is affected by the resulting haze though this is not constant. Maybe one reason the hit TV show The Amazing Race (and its counterpart The Amazing Race Asia) have featured Kuala Lumpur as a destination in their episodes is because Kuala Lumpur has such favorable weather – and great tourist attractions too.

Petronas Twin Towers and The Golden Triangle commercial area

Some tourist attractions to see in Kuala Lumpur are the soaring Petronas Twin Towers and The Golden Triangle commercial area of Kuala Lumpur. The Petronas Twin Towers are actually the tallest twin towers in the world and can be found right next to the bustling Suria KLCC shopping mall. The fifth-tallest telecommunication tower in the world (known as the Menara Kuala Lumpur) can also be found in Kuala Lumpur. The Menara Kuala Lumpur may seem to be higher than the Petronas Twin Towers because it is situated on a hill, but is actually shorter. You can visit the giant aquarium dubbed Aquaria KLCC in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center and see over 5,000 types of tropical fishes swimming inside. Smack in the center of the city of Kuala Lumpur is the small tropical forest known as Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve. There is also the Istana Negara which is the official royal residence in Kuala Lumpur of the King and Queen of Malaysia.

Temples in Kuala Lumpur - Hindu temples, Sri Kandaswamy Kovil

The presence of people from different ethnic groups can be proven by the existence of certain religious sites within Kuala Lumpur. There are Hindu temples in Kuala Lumpur such as the Sri Kandaswamy Kovil and the Sri Mahamariamman temples. The Federal Territory Mosque is also situated within Kuala Lumpur, along the Jalan Duta. You can find an example of a post modernist mosque in Kuala Lumpur which is the National Mosque, also called the Masjid Negara. The Chinese also have their local Chinatown in Kuala Lumpur, with a Chinese Night Market thriving on Petaling Street.
