Hong Kong City and Travel Guide
More Good Reasons to Visit Hong Kong Today
It might be said that a Hong Kong vacation is practically a traveler’s cliché by now because nearly all jetsetters have made Hong Kong their vacation destination at one point or another. So why visit Hong Kong now?
Shopping, festivals, parades, operas is only a few things that you can experience in Hong Kong
Most likely if you have visited this city in the past that your visit centered around one thing Hong Kong is well known for – shopping! But your Hong Kong visit may be incomplete if you did not stick around long enough to participate in at least one of the major Chinese festivals of Hong Kong. A Hong Kong Chinese festival is a community affair that all Hong Kong residents look forward to observing. Each Hong Kong festival is different, yet also similar to one another in that they share certain commonalities such as colorful parades, rowdy carnivals, fortune-telling by feng shui experts, nightly mah-jong sessions, and intriguing Chinese opera performances. You can smell the incense smoke from the observance of a Hong Kong festival a block away. Hasten your steps and you may be able to catch the lion and dragon dancers in their fascinating traditional dances meant to drive away the spirits of bad luck and evil from traditional Chinese establishments in Hong Kong. And of course, no Hong Kong festival would be complete without the lighting of fireworks – another traditional way of eliminating ill luck and evil portents from the city.
The Chinese New Year and Dong Zhi Festival (or Winter Solstice Festival.)
The community in the city observes the lunar Chinese calendar which is the basis for the timing of each festival. On Day 1 of the First Moon (or the first lunar month), Hong Kong celebrates the Chinese New Year. On Day 15, you might be just in time for the Spring Lantern Festival. During the Third Moon, there are two major Hong Kong festivals, namely, the Ching Ming Festival and the Birthday of Tin Hau. One major festival (which occurs on the month of the Fifth Moon) is the famous Dragon Boat Festival of Hong Kong, in which dragon boats with teams of rowers compete to be the fastest dragon boat team in all of Hong Kong. And shortly before the celebration of the Christian Christmas Day on December 25, there is the last Hong Kong festival for the lunar year which is the Dong Zhi Festival (or Winter Solstice Festival.)
Hong Kong is a very special city
Even though Communist China has regained jurisdiction over Hong Kong, Hong Kong has managed to retain its colonial and traditional Chinese flavor. Throughout present-day Hong Kong, you can find many important heritage sites that are open for visits by the Hong Kong public. For example, you can find the sole ancient Chinese pagoda of Hong Kong along the Ping Shan Heritage Trail of Yuen Long. You can get a glimpse of what life is like being part of one of the Five Great Clans of Hong Kong by paying a visit to the Tang Clan in the New Territories. If you would like to know something more about the famed Kowloon Walled City (which used to operate as a military outpost of the Qing Government in the 19th Century), there are parts of the South and East Gates of the Kowloon Walled City which were discovered during archaeological digs to be well-preserved enough to display as relics to the public.
