Delhi City and Travel Guide
Take a Trip to the Past in Delhi, India
Delhi is one of the oldest cities in the world to have been continuously inhabited in the many centuries that is has been existing. It was previously the site of the capitals of certain ancient Indian empires in the past. Located in northern India, Modern Delhi is presently the second-biggest metropolis in the country since it has 13 million residents. But despite its attempts to be progressive and be at par with other modern cities, Delhi still maintains much of the atmosphere of its ancient past.
New Delhi - British empire
Old Delhi is different from New Delhi since Old Delhi (or Old City) contains structures built during the period when it was the capital of the Mughal empire. New Delhi, for its part, was constructed during the administration of the British Raj and eventually became the capital of the country after India declared its independence from the British empire. Now, New Delhi is home to offices of the federal government of India (such as the Parliament of India.) With the strong migration of people from other places in India, Delhi has become a cosmopolitan metropolis that faces some problems attributed to rapid urbanization (including difficulties in allocating resources, heavy road traffic, and pollution.) There are many rich people in Delhi but there is also significant poverty, which is something that the government still needs to fully address.
It´s very hot in Delhi
Tourists who come to Delhi expecting luxurious accommodations everywhere may be in for a shock. For example, in the summer which lasts from early April and ends in October, severe power and water shortages are experienced in Delhi. Many people die in Delhi from the heat wave that comes every summer. In the winter, heavy fog may prevent air, road and rail traffic from progressing smoothly according to Delhi schedules. City structures may also not be able to stand up to major earthquakes that can hit Delhi anytime since Delhi lies in seismic zone IV. A new visitor to Delhi has to be prepared for such eventualities because they are part and parcel of Delhi life.
Transportations in Delhi
Problems such as these prevent Delhi from taking its place among the most progressive cities of the world. Because it is so densely populated, Delhi utilities find it difficult to meet the demands of Delhi residents. Another problem that the Delhi government currently needs to solve is the lack of adequate transport to meet the needs of all Delhi residents. Residents and tourists in Delhi have the choice of suburban rail transit, cabs, a rapid transit system, buses, and auto rickshaws. Productivity suffers because there are just not enough transport systems to meet the needs of the Delhi populace.
Population is growing fast
A visitor to Delhi may also be shocked by the presence of so much poverty amidst so much apparent wealth. According to statistics in 1999 to 2000, 1,149,000 of Delhi residents live below the poverty line. To compound the problems of Delhi, the population keeps growing at a fast clip due to natural reasons and additional migration of Indians into Delhi. To make its mark in the world in the future, Delhi leaders have to figure out how to reduce congestion of the Delhi populace. The other problems of Delhi will then eventually be solved through proper allocation of scarce resources. Only then will Delhi be able to be considered a progressive metropolis of India.
